Creating an Updox printer

This article is about the process used to install an Updox printer. Printing a file into Updox is the most commonly utilized way to move a file into your Updox Inbox/Workspace.
 

Updox Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) Printer

In some cases we may recommend that you install the Updox Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) Printer. If we have recommended that for you please follow the steps below.

Windows

  1. Open the Windows Control Panel (can be found under the Start menu) (For Windows 8 users who need assistance finding the Control Panel: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/where-is-control-panel)
  2. Open the printers screen.
  • In Windows XP this section is called Printers and Faxes.
  • In Windows Vista this section is called Printers
  • In Windows 7 and Windows 8 this section is called Devices and Printers
  1. Click the Add a Printer button (In Windows 8 click The printer that I want isn't listed and skip step 6)
  2. If prompted for printer type select: Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer (not a local printer)
  3. Click The printer that I want isn't listed
  4. Choose the Select a shared printer by name option
  5. In the available field type https://myupdox.com/api/printer
  6. (Skip to step 9 if you are not a Practice Fusion user.) Practice Fusion users: In Updox, go to Menu, Profile. Scroll down to the section Printer Credentials. If there are no values in the Printer Login and Printer Password, click the Generate button to populate these fields. Use the Printer Login as your Username and Printer Password as your Password in Step 9
  7. A new window will pop up and prompt for the Network Password. In the User Name field type your Updox User Name and in the Password field type your Updox password and click OK
  8. In the Manufacturer box on the left, choose HP
  9. In the Printers box on the right, look for one of the following drivers (If you do not find the one listed for your OS try with another of the drivers listed here):
  • Windows XP : HP ColorLaserJet 5/5M PS
  • Windows Vista: HP ColorLaserJet 5/5M PS or HP ColorLaserJet 2800 Series PS
  • Windows 7 : HP ColorLaserJet 5/5M PS or HP ColorLaserJet 2800 Series PS
  • Windows 8 : HP ColorLaserJet 2800 Series PS or HP ColorLaserJet 3800 PS Class Driver
  • Windows 10:  HP ColorLaserJet 3000 PS Class Driver or HP ColorLaserJet 3800 PS Class Driver
  1. Click Next
  2. The printer name will default to Updox on https://myupdox.com and cannot be changed.
  3. Depending on your version of Windows, the following questions make be asked. Order may vary.
  • Make this the default printer? This is up to you, you can change this setting at any time.
  • Print a test page? We usually print a test page just to make sure that the new printer is correctly configured.
  1. Click Finish to complete the printer setup.

 

Updox Local Printer

Windows

  1. Open the Windows Control Panel (can be found under the Start menu)
  2. Open the printers screen.
  • In Windows XP this section is called Printers and Faxes.
  • In Windows Vista this section is called Printers
  • In Windows 7 and Windows 8 this section is called Devices and Printers 
  1. Click the Add a Printer button (In Windows 8 click The printer that I want isn't listed)
  2. You want to add a local printer
  3. Uncheck the Automatically detect and install... checkbox, if you have one
  4. Click Next
  5. You want to use an existing port
  6. From the drop-down list of ports, choose the Updox_9100 option (if you don't this option, see below)
  7. Click Next
  8. In the Manufacturer box on the left, choose HP
  9. In the Printers box on the right, look for one of the following drivers (If you do not find the one listed for your OS try with another of the drivers listed here):
  • Windows XP : HP ColorLaserJet 5/5M PS
  • Windows Vista: HP ColorLaserJet 5/5M PS or HP ColorLaserJet 2800 Series PS
  • Windows 7 : HP ColorLaserJet 5/5M PS or HP ColorLaserJet 2800 Series PS
  • Windows 8 : HP ColorLaserJet 2800 Series PS or HP ColorLaserJet 3800 PS Class Driver
  1. Click Next
  2. You want to Keep existing driver or Use the driver that is currently installed, if you are asked
  3. Change the name of the printer to Updox, or whatever you like
  4. Depending on your version of Windows, the following questions make be asked. Order may vary.
  • Make this the default printer? This is up to you, you can change this setting at any time.
  • Share this printer? Unless you know you need a shared printer, we recommend not sharing.
  • Print a test page? We usually print a test page just to make sure that the new printer is correctly configured.

What if I don't have a printer port for Updox_9100?

If you don't have an option for Updox_9100 under the drop-down list for Use existing port, you can create that port with the following instructions.
  1. Select the Create new port option instead of Use existing port
  2. Select Standard TCP/IP Port as the type of port
  3. Click Next
  4. Enter localhost for the Printer Hostname or IP Address
  5. Enter Updox_9100 for the port name
  6. If you have a Query the printer... checkbox, uncheck it
  7. Click Next
  8. Windows will try (unsuccessfully) to detect the printer, this usually takes 30-40 seconds
  9. It will then say that it was unable to detect the device and that additional port information is needed
  10. You just need to check the Custom option (you do not need to click the Settings button)
  11. Click Next (on Windows XP, you'll also need to click Finish to get back to the printer setup)
  12. At this point, you can jump back up to the original steps, you'll be at step 10

OS X (Mac)

  1. Open a web browser and go to http://myupdox.com/files/UpdoxPrinterSetup.zip to download the Mac Printer application
  2. Click on the downloaded file named “Updox Printer Setup” to unzip. Double-click to Open with Archive
  3. Click on the unzipped file to begin installation
  4. Set the name to Updox Printer, or whatever else you like
  5. Open an item to print to Undox selecting the newly created Updox Printer and enter your ** Updox username and password (check box to save credentials to Keychain) 
**Practice Fusion users: In Updox, go to Menu, Profile. Scroll down to the section Printer Credentials. If there are no values in the Printer Login and Printer Password, click the Generate button to populate these fields. Use the Printer Login as your Username and Printer Password as your Password in Step 5.
